Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? Actually, it's more like no NSAIDs period. I have not read anything that it is OK to ever take it again because of the ulcer risk. You just don't have enough stomach left to chance an ulcer developing.
You should have been given discharge instructions from your surgeon.MEDICATIONS After Bariatric Surgery
There's a list of NSAIDs and a table of medications here for each type of bariatric surgery of what is and is not OK to take. Ibuprofen is a "no" across the board.

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? My Dr. said after two to three weeks it would be okay to take NSAIDS again.
And the following is from Oxford Bariatric, General and
Metabolic Surgery:"Those patients who take NSAIDS (non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for arthritis
can continue the medication after Sleeve
Gastrectomy. (These medications are to be
avoided after the adjustable gastric band
(erosion) and especially after the gastric
bypass (ulcers) ."

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? I was told by my doctor to wait at least 3 months. If you research this question online its the one weight loss surgery where you can take NSAIDS after. Its listed as a "pro" on many different articles I read prior to having the surgery. I lived on motrin and aspirin before my surgery for back aches and head aches. I havent taken either one since my surgery. But its nice to know I could take them if needed. There are many different views on this subject but I think some of these surgeons use the same guidelines for the VSG as they do for the other weight loss surgeries.

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? I think some of the surgeons aren't keeping up with this "newer" surgery. They have premade packets to give regarding the bypass and band but haven't actually taken the time to tailor make one for the sleeve. I wanted the sleeve BECAUSE it was not the bypass or band, I wanted to be able to keep things other than eating closer to the same as before surgery. I love that the sleeve doesn't have the specific problems associated with the other two surgeries...go sleevers!! LOL

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? I asked my nutritionist today. She said that the "no NSAIDs" thing was primarily for those who've had the RYN, because where they reattach the intestine is more prone to leaks and ulcers. However, it is definitely something that people should discuss with their surgeon, because everyone has different issues, and certainly if you have a problem with reflux/acid then you should be extra careful. And any OTC med that you take on a consistent basis should be discussed (one assumes that for arthritis that you'd need to take something regularly, and that might be an issue even without gastric surgery). Taking ibuprofen for an occasional headache or something along those lines should not pose a problem.

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? I asked my doc this last week at my checkup, as Advil is the only thing that combats my menstrual cramps (none of the the over the counter cramp-specific lady pills do a thing for me). I was told that if I was taking a few Advil here and there for cramps or a headache or whatever - that it was no big deal. But - if I had something going on where I required daily Advil, they said no way... to substitute something else.

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? BusyGirl (Alli) have you ever tried Aleve for cramps? IF it is okay to take it is a great med for cramps relief. You would want to take two at first then one every 8-12 hours.

Re: When can I start using ibuprofen again? I don't know about a time frame after surgery, but what I was told is you can use them occasionally. I was told in my pre op visit the other day that if you need to use it for more than 5 consecutive days, then you need to talk to your surgeon. As a general rule, yes Tylenol is safer. However, when I get horrible headaches, Tylenol just doesn't do it for me. So I'm sticking with Advil, so long as it's occasional use.
