I picked upward The Stranger on the Ice as I needed a book originally published in another language for a challenge. I must admit, in recent years I've only tried a couple of other translated titles. This book didn't make me want to rush and try some others.

Although Calonego wrote the volume originally in German, the setting is the Canadian Chill Circumvolve. I really wanted to similar this book for this reason lonely. I dear the complete foreignness of snow and ice and am always eager to read something set in such a common cold climate.

Calonego takes total advantage of the setting early on when a immature woman'south body is found on the side of the route. Not whatsoever old route simply the water ice road made famous from the reality show Ice Route Truckers. This first chapter was actually okay and I thought from it that I might savor the rest only…

The plot and characters fabricated information technology a chip impossible for me to connect with the book. For example, likewise about the start, Valerie, our heroine, takes a phone phone call from a friend, Sedna, pleading for help earlier the call breaks up and they get cut off. Valerie doesn't fret too much well-nigh Sedna'southward predicament nor rush to call the authorities because, well, Valerie is in bed with a cold. Okay then…

Valerie does continue to call up about all of Sedna'south annoying and suspicious behaviours, thus attempting to justify why one wouldn't get too anxious with the late night telephone call. This sort of sums upwards how each scenes goes. Valerie and Clem, our hero, are constantly doing something odd and so only thinking about things, usually things that happened in the by. Their pasts aren't shown in flashbacks nor is there much actual action of things happening in the moment. Just lots of thinking.

And so in that location was the poor grammer. I'chiliad agape information technology only drove me to lark. One day either Calonego or her translator, Chapple, read almost brusque precipitous sentences. And they decided they were a expert thought. So they used them. All the fourth dimension. Often in conjunction with exclamation marks. But why! I don't know. It was annoying. I needed something longer. Perchance with description. And and then there were Yoda moments. Backwards were things. Patience is a virtue. But not one of my traits. I got very bored!

And don't even get me started on the stilted and clunky dialogue.

I was going to stress that the book may be ameliorate read in its original language and things might have been literally lost in translation. However, I did glance at some reviews written in German and, although my retentivity of grade 8 High german lessons are not good enough for me to read what they've said, none of them have particularly loftier ratings. Then…

I really couldn't recommend this to anyone. 1 out of 5 with the 1 existence awarded for the ice road really.

What a great book! The setting, mystery based on true facts and the brilliantly nuanced plot with overriding sense of foreboding throughout.

At that place'due south a lot to like nigh this story and the fact the author has done the verbal same trail every bit the main character really fascinated me from the off. It's a mega trail too so very impressive. I plant that as well as the mystery I learned so much about the Inunit communities and way of life at the same fourth dimension. Boy, it was a remote and chilling feel reading information technology and beingness there but what an experience it was. the book is evocative and the words cut similar blades of ice.

The fact that a frozen torso is found actually sends the chills upwardly the back of your neck. When ice and the icy north completely controls where you get, how you alive and sometimes how you lot die, to spend time there, even fictionally can really cause serious burns it would seem! I did like this i. It had everything a good thriller should have and more than. More please and how I would love to come across the author! Go u.s.a. a cup of hot coffee each and pick her brains further on the setting and her inspiration,. The story behind the story is almost as interesting equally the book itself. More please!

Interesting thriller with a fascinating setting in the Canadian Arctic.

At the beginning of the book a body of a young adult female is found on the Water ice Road. The Ice Road runs from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk and it is the longest non-privatized ice route in the world (equally nosotros learn from the book). The discovery of a immature adult female's corpse causes an uproar in a modest community. No 1 seems to know how she happened to be in that location and who she was.

The main graphic symbol Clem Hardeven is very troubled by the whole affair.

Interesting thriller with a fascinating setting in the Canadian Arctic.

At the beginning of the book a trunk of a young woman is found on the Ice Route. The Ice Road runs from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk and information technology is the longest not-privatized ice road in the globe (as we learn from the book). The discovery of a immature woman's corpse causes an uproar in a pocket-sized community. No one seems to know how she happened to be there and who she was.

The main character Clem Hardeven is very troubled by the whole affair. He wants answers and he wants them asap. He feels responsible for everything that happens on the Water ice Route, because he is 1 of the people supervising it. He won't end at nada to learn the truth.

Another character Valerie also wants to know what happened and she has some suspicions that the expressionless woman is somehow continued with her friend Sedna, who mysteriously disappeared. Valerie regularly takes tourists on the Chill tour to Whitehorse in the Yukon. On the tour they travel by dogsled along the Takhini River and visit the gold-miner town of Dawson Urban center. While reading this novel I also felt similar a tourist. There was a lot of information nearly the climate, tourist destinations and the history of the place. By reading this book it was also possible to larn a fiddling almost the Inuvialuit community, its traditions and believes, which are fascinating. The characters participated in the Muskrat Jamboree, the Inuvialuit spring festival.

There are many secrets in this novel and it was interesting to larn about them. Valerie and Clem are nice characters and it was a pleasure to read almost their adventures. Simply the all-time office without a doubt was the setting in the Canadian Arctic. After finishing this book, I think that the real "killer" was the Arctic itself. Information technology is a frozen place, the climate is brutal and if y'all are non cautious enough it volition impale you lot. Just imagine: you go exterior in the jump time and information technology is xx-5 degrees below zero. What a torture! When it is sunny and "simply" 13 degrees beneath, people rejoice and telephone call it a good weather. In this climate yous tin can't go out anyone alone outside, because it could mean a death penalty if a person got lost. The author Bernadette Calonego did a great job describing the realities of life in the Arctic and giving her readers the feel of the identify. I very much recommend this book for everyone who wants to read a good thriller and is interested in the Arctic.

I received "The Stranger on the Ice" from the publisher via NetGalley. I would similar to thank the writer and the publisher for providing me with the advance reader copy of the book.

Information technology was on 1 of those Chill expeditions when Valerie's mom mysteriously died. Her death was never talked virtually and Valerie never knew what happened.

Right earlier Valerie takes her latest bout grouping to the Arctic, a adult female's body is plant frozen on Ice Road outside an Inuit village. Valerie as well gets a strange message from Sedna, a woman she once considered a friend. So Valerie meets one of her mom'southward childhood friends. Naturally, I disliked Sedna. She seemed crazy, I did feel bad for her at the end, simply only slightly.

There were several mysteries revealed throughout the book. Valerie discovers what happens on her parent'south fateful trip. The reasons behind Sedna'south actions are revealed. I honestly never saw that coming and institute that part to be a wonderful twist. It was non what I was expecting. I enjoyed beingness on the tour with Valerie. The book was beautifully written. It was a bit of a mystery, with a niggling romance thrown in.

I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

The plot was interesting simply besides many things had been thrown in and not fully developed. Reading the author'due south annotation some things are explained, other (small-scale) events don't have a proper resolution. Some people like open endings and hither we accept some resolution and something left to our imagination, and so everybody can find something to honey about it.

The frozen body of a young girl is institute not far from an Inuit village merely before Valerie takes a group of tourists out. That and the mysterious disappearance of her friend Sedna upset her quite a bit and she can't await to get to Tuktoyaktuk to share her concerns with Clem.

Her male parent never discussed it with either her or her twin brothers and she grew upwardly not really knowing her birth mother, only with a loving stepmother. Her beloved of the Arctic may accept something to practise with wanting to find out what actually happened to her mother.
The tour, as lovingly described by the writer, is so vivid you about automatically screw up your eyes when traversing the blinding snow and ice; equally for the cold...unbelievable! Somehow I don't call up I would travel further than Canada's Sunshine Coast and Vancouver...but reading near the Inuit communities, the animals, the permafrost and the stunning sights was fascinating. Of grade I Googled the area; the history of information technology solitary is then interesting. The but thing I wouldn't do, as a fervent dog lover, is visit the Arctic - I would be like Clem'south ex-girlfriend: so upset the dogs are kept on a curt chain, outside 24/7 unless they're pulling sleds, I'd have to loftier tail it out of in that location.
Merely that's just a personal observation; the book is terrific, I highly recommend it. A good mystery with a surprise ending and a flake of romance in an exotic locale...what's not to love!?

A mystery and history in the frozen chill

The volume has several plots that inter weave with splendid characters. The description of the Chill landscape and its native people painted such an enlightening motion-picture show of this region. Enjoy your reading of this arctic mystery.

Stranger on the Ice is a very complex thriller! It has twists and turns, suspicious characters, lovely folklore and a tense story. This is a terrific novel with well written characters and a wealth of detail for the locations, the people and the story itself.

Brought the arctic to life

It was a slow starting time and a bit confusing during the kickoff third of the volume. As the pieces started meeting, the story became much more interesting. Some strong characters emerged, just there were many twists. Loved the scenery almost of all!

A little disruptive, but some parts were interesting. I didn't care for the hunting and creature cruelty, but I guess that'due south how people in the Arctic Circle live. Interesting. Loved the details!

I enjoyed the characters and story. The details of the people and places and what they did there, were what brought the book to life for me.

If for nothing else, read this for the setting. It is well-done with a sense of surface area and forbidding which perfectly evokes the arctic. The sensitive dealing with race relations was a surprise (the reader gets to learn a lot about the modern Inuvialuit which I enjoyed). The characters are decent-they don't detract from the mystery which is a truthful mystery. There're a lot of secrets, a lot of difficult to grasp characters, and a lot is left unknown which suits the overall tone, setting, and mystery. If for nothing else, read this for the setting. This is the first book I've ever read that has been published by Amazon Crossing. After a bit of inquiry googling I've discovered that Amazon Crossing is the translation arm of Amazon Publishing, so it'south not cocky-publishing, only you can advise a book to be translated on their website. Regardless, I was adequately happy with The Stranger on the Ice by Bernadette Calonego which was translated from the German by Gerald Chapple, and interestingly plenty, information technology takes place in Canada, and Calonego actually This is the first book I've ever read that has been published by Amazon Crossing. After a flake of research googling I've discovered that Amazon Crossing is the translation arm of Amazon Publishing, so it'due south not self-publishing, merely you tin can propose a book to be translated on their website. Regardless, I was fairly happy with The Stranger on the Water ice by Bernadette Calonego which was translated from the German past Gerald Chapple, and interestingly plenty, it takes place in Canada, and Calonego actually lives in Canada (only was born in Switzerland) then it didn't actually experience like a translation at all!

I recollect choosing this out of a catalogue to review because the setting sounded so exotic. It takes place in the Canadian Arctic, and the 'Water ice Road' in particular plays a big part in the plotline-it's where the outset body is establish. The Ice Route in the Northwest Territories used to open a few months a year equally it was fabricated completely of ice, but it has now closed and been replaced with an all-flavour road (not as cool, but much more practical!).

Our protagonist is Valerie, a young woman who leads tours of audacious people upwards to the Arctic for a few weeks at a time, but the discovery of this body has made her trip (a flake) more dangerous than usual. In addition to this, Valerie has a long-kept hush-hush; her male parent was a famous hockey role player, and her female parent died in a strange accident up in the Chill decades before when they were together. Although she's always wanted to know what happened she'due south never been able to detect out the truth until this about recent trip where more than one expressionless body shows up. Oh, and in that location'southward a love story, just information technology's not really important to the understanding of the book and it doesn't play a huge part anyway.

The diverse mysteries of this book were interesting and well conceived; a few people die and we're not sure why, or who really had a motive to exercise it. Aside from other strange occurrences, there's a the question equally to whether there is a mythical power at play, as the beliefs of the local Inuvialuit population incorporate Shamanism and their power to predict or influence events. In fact, one of the best parts of this volume are the myths and stories that we readers get to hear nigh this from special part of Canada (obviously I'yard a bit biased being Canadian myself, but I still call back people will observe this interesting).

There are a few things I didn't like about the book; firstly the pacing of information technology lagged towards the middle. With the introduction of and then many cherry herrings and sub-plots it felt like we were losing momentum that built so easily in the start part of the story, so you really needed to focus on the characters and their various motives to go y'all through some pages.

Secondly, the dialogue was a bit stilted at times. This can happen in a translation, and Chapple did practice a actually skilful job at making it menstruation in almost parts, but in that location was some inner dialogue that felt clunky, for example:

"She peered into his exhausted face and thought: I really similar him very much" (p. 221).

Of class the regular reader may stop for an extra 2nd or ii after reading that sentence and think it'south a bit odd simply keep moving along, whereas a reviewer similar myself feels it necessary to point it out, but for the sake of doing my task properly. Should this forestall you lot from picking upward the volume in the get-go place? Of course not. However, exist aware that these bug exist before yous selection it up, that way you tin focus on the cute descriptions of life in the Arctic from Calonego's indicate of view.

Am besten gefiel mir das Setting der Geschichte in der kanadischen Arktis. Die Geschichte ist spannend zu lesen und kurzweilig.
Allerdings fand ich „Stormy Cove" besser, spannender und irgendwie runder von der Story her.

Equally a child, I sneaked in my brothers` rooms to read their adventure books like "Ivanhoe", "The Leatherstocking Tales", "Treasure Isle", "Robinson Crusoe", "Huckleberry Finn". Or I persuaded my female parent that I was old enough to read romances (they were really harmless!). To brand me happy, I wanted nothing more than read a good book while eating an apple, and to be left alone!

My female parent, a poet, encouraged me to try my hand at writing at an early on age. My first publication was a fairytale, which appeared in a Swiss paper when I was eleven years old. I was soooo proud!

But I did non turn into a writer right away. I became a instructor, then a reporter and a strange correspondent.

My career has included working as a reporter/editor for Reuters newsagency in Zurich. My time covering financial news for Reuters inspired my book "The Zurich Conspiracy".

From 1990 to 2000, I was the foreign correspondent for "Süddeutsche Zeitung", the largest circulation daily paper in Germany, reporting from Switzerland.

I at present reside and work as a freelance foreign correspondent and author near Vancouver, Canada, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast (okay, in winter, it is raining a lot). Visitors in my lawn include black bears, racoons, coyotes and assuming eagles. I write regularly for newspapers and magazines in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

My first volume "Nutze deine Feinde" (translated into "The Zurich Conspiracy") and my second book "Unter dunklen Wassern" (Nether dark waters) were both published past Bloomsbury Berlin Verlag. In November 2011, „Oh wie schön ist Kanada!" (Oh, how beautiful is Canada!) was published past Ullstein Verlag.
